about

I had a great-great grandmother who started a church in rural North Carolina. When the church began, they didn't have an organ or piano for the music, so all hymns were sung acapella. Someday, I hope I get to sing this one with my cousins, the Bunches. Maybe our great-great-grandmother would like it.

The lyrics illustrate an interesting thing about faith: it's often found while we think we're doing something else.

lyrics

WHEN I WENT TO THE RIVER

Well, I went to see my mother but I saw my Lord.
I went to see my mother but I saw my Lord.
I went to see my mother but I saw my Lord
when I went to the river just to see.

I went to see my father but I saw my Lord.
I went to see my father but I saw my Lord.
I went to see my father but I saw my Lord
when I went to the river just to see.

When I went to the river,
when I went to the river,
when I went to the river,
when I went to the river just to see.

Well, I went to see my sister but I saw my Lord.
I went to see my sister but I saw my Lord.
I went to see my sister but I saw my Lord
when I went to the river just to see.

Well I went to see my brother but I saw my Lord.
I went to see my brother but I saw my Lord.
I went to see my brother but I saw my Lord
when I went to the river just to see.

When I went to the river,
when I went to the river,
when I went to the river
when I went to the river just to see.

When I went to the river,
when I went to the river,
when I went to the river,
when I went to the river just to see.
