about

Ella's father passed away before I had a chance to meet him. I wish we had met, because from what I've heard of him, I think we'd have gotten along really well. I wrote this song, however, imagining the slight challenge I might have encountered in asking for her hand in marriage. This track also features Ella playing a beautiful Swedish instrument called a nyckelharpa on the first half of the instrumental break. We first heard a nyckelharpa during a performance by a fantastic trio called Vassen at the Wintergrass music festival in 2012. The sound of the harpa amazed us and Ella had to have one. The track also features a hammered dulcimer for the first time on a HEDRICK record. When we came back to Seattle to buy the nyckelharpa, we made the mistake of going into a music store and I somehow walked out with a really nice handmade hammered dulcimer by Dusty Strings.

lyrics

THEN YOU'LL BE MY BRIDE

Oh my love, I have no means to provide for you
so I must leave ‘til work is done
then I’ll come for you.

Oh your father said to me, “Boy, you are no prize.”
But I will prove him wrong, you see, and
then you’ll be my bride.
Then you’ll be my bride.

Oh my love, while I toil so far from your side,
don’t forget my heart is yours and
soon you’ll be my bride.

Oh your father said to me, “Boy, you are no prize.”
But I will prove him wrong, you see, and
then you’ll be my bride.
