about

I've loved old timey gospel music since I was a kid, an influence from my grandmother, Montie Lee Stout Cox ("Mom-mom") and my mother, Juanita Cox Hedrick. From my years of living in the NC mountains, I also gained a deep appreciation for Appalachian gospel music in particular. There is often such an intense sense of desperation and fatalism in mountain gospel, coupled with an unquestioning, resigned faith, that the music is unflinchingly painful and yet uplifting to experience. Please Take Me Home is my attempt to capture some of the essence of mountain gospel, as best I can. The lyrics were inspired by days spent with my aging mother and grandmother and their common desire, expressed decades apart, to go home.

lyrics

PLEASE TAKE ME HOME

Oh my Lord, please take me home;
my poor soul no more to roam.

Seasons come and seasons go;
the wind blows through all four.
Nothing slows the step of time
or keeps death from our door.

Oh my Lord, please take me home;
my poor soul no more to roam.

Mother dear, I love you so;
love my wife and child.
I cry out to Him above,
resigned unto my plight.

Oh my Lord, please take me home;
my poor soul no more to roam.
